Origin Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers (Slovensky Hrubosrsty Stavac) are a relatively new breed to these shores. Dating back to the late 1950s, the SRHP originated in Czechoslovakia following World War II and is believed to have been developed using the Weimaraner (obviously the dominant colour), German Wirehaired Pointer, and Cesky Fousek both the latter two breeds recognised by the FCI. The result? An all purpose working dog that has an attractive rough coat with the distinctive colouring reminiscent of its Weimaraner ancestor.

Following the break up of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993, Margaret Holmes and Kevin Bingham introduced the breed into the UK. In 1997 they imported five dogs which have become the foundation stock in this country, they are: Amie and Amaretto vom Kapffelsen of Emmaclan who were both imported from Germany and Spek, Supa and Santal Zo Sorosa of Emmaclan imported from Slovakia.

In 1998, the Kennel Club added the breed to the Imported Breed Register where the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer is classifed as a member of the hunt, point, retrieve gundog sub-group.
Slovakian Rough Haired Pointers (SRHPs) registered with the Kennel Club and now has a breed standard. As we moved forward and gained Kennel Club approval of our Club we have moved forward with the breed. As of 1st December 2008 a breed standard has been approved by the Kennel Club the SRHP can now be shown in the UK.

Research After collecting Flurry (Ansona Ammara at Stormdancer, KC/BVA Hip Score: 6/4) and Nettle (World Champion and World Winner 2006 , Ch. Poland , Ch. NL, JCh. Lux. EW '04 BW ‘04 AW'05 Ansona Arabella at Stormdancer, KC/BVA Hip Score:5/5) in February 2003 from Tricia Grimes (Ansona) no time was wasted on embarking on extensive research to find other SRH breeders and owners from around the world. There is no doubt that the Internet has proved to be a fantastic tool in which to make contact with other owners and has unveiled and united a small cluster of breeders, owners and enthusiasts throughout Europe. It’s amazing that no matter how difficult the language barrier, talking ‘dogs’ can be understood in any language!
After establishing several contacts and with a trip to the Euro Dog Show in Bratislava in October 2003, Sandra travelled once again to Slovakia in November 2003 with a mission to import a further two SRHs to the UK. They are Evar Kaicul at Stormdancer (Evar) and Eny Kaicul at Stormdancer (Imp) (Honey) - both litter siblings came into the UK in May 2004.
2005 - back to Slovakia to find another unrelated male............ and what a find! Clooney - aka - Luxembourg Champion & Junior Champion Champion Argo od Vitalosa at Stormdancer. was trained and is shown by Edwin Lenaerts.
Our aim at Stormdancer has always been to try and increase the gene pool of this wonderful breed without popularising it too quickly thereby protecting its health and temperament. With the help of other SRHP breeders and owners throughout the world, we hope to work together to take this delightful breed forward and the importation of new stock can only be a positive step forward.

General Health The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer is monitored and governed by the Kennel Club as a new and rare breed. As with all new breeds the gene pool is relatively small and it is in this regard that some puppies, unbeknowi to the breeder, may present with a genetic defect, more so than in an established breed where the intitial problems have been weaned out.. It is our responsibility, as members of the Kennel Club’s ‘Accredited Breeder Scheme’ that we bring this to your attention, although statistics currently show only a minority defect being less than 2%. We remain committed to health screening and encourage aall breeders and owners with problems to come forward with the relevant information so as to ensure that these faults do not nknowingly re-enter the gene pool. As some of these conditions are not noticed until the puppy matures I strongly advise that all breeders endorse the KC Registration (R) Progeny Not Eligable For Registration - until the offspring is at least 2 years of age and the relevant screening schemes have been carried out and for an overall assessment of temparment /confirmation / potential has been carried out.
Current Statistics of Registration November 2009 Of the 305 KC registered puppies tha have been registered with the Kennel Club in the UK a total of 5 have been reported to have "mouth/ bite problems". In most cases a veterinary extration of some teeth seems to have resolved any discomfort issues for these dogs. Please do watch for any bite problems and do let the Breeder know so they can monitor the issue and work in conjuntion with other breeders with the aim eradicate this problem. One other puppy was seen by the breeder to be undershot and homed as a pet and not to be bred from. However, please do bear in mind that by the law of nature not every puppy is going to have a correct scissor bite! One SRHP grew to have strabismus (cross eyes) which is known to be more common in felines than canines There has also been 1 reported puppy known to have a skin problem. Diagnosis and tretment as per web link http://www.tapestrychihuahuas.com/ColorDilutionAlopecia.html
It must also be noted that it can take up to 2 years for the coat to develop and some smoother coated puppies can become hairier and some hairy puppies can shed and become shorter coated. As such the puppy coats can only be guessed at and not guaranteed! All stock BVA KC x-rayed for Hip Dysplacia to date have produced scores ranging between 2/2 (Total 4) and 14/15 (Total 29) making the current breed average an encouraging Total of 9.
There have been no other reported problems but breeders and owners are encouraged to share all information of seen faults. This is should not become a"witch hunt" but a sharing of knowledge so that we may move forward and strive to eliminate any reported defects. Breeders should always promote the health and welfare of the breed and should be applauded for their openess and honesty when reporting a problem after they have done all the required health screening in order to breed the best ............ and that is what we at Stormdancer aspire towards!
