Dogs similar to the Weimaraner have existed in Germany since the 17th century but it was not until the 1800s that the breed as we know it today was developed. It was at the court of the Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar that the Weimaraner was originally bred to hunt large game such as boar and deer but then adapted to hunting fowl for sport, as the population of big game was becoming increasingly sparse. Once perfected they were closely guarded until 1896 when the breed was officially recognized in Germany. The following year the Weimaraner Club of Germany was formed and only members of that club were allowed to breed this prestigious dog.

It was not until 1929 that a member of that club, an American sportsman exported the first weimaraners. This gentleman, Howard Knight, helped to found a Weimaraner Club in America and served as the first president of the American club however it was not until 1942 that the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Major R H Petty imported the first pair of Weimaraners into the UK in 1952, a bitch named Cobra Von Boberstrand and a dog Bando Von Fohr.
